AIDS Walk New York 2007

AIDS Walk New York is the world’s largest AIDS fund raiser. Since 1986, this annual event has raised more than $90 million for research, treatment and support services.

This year I couldn’t participate as a walker, so I agreed to work as a sign-in volunteer. I reported to Central Park at 6:45 a.m. and spent the morning welcoming and signing in walkers, registering people who decided to join at the last minute, handling forms and gathering donations.

A substantial number of those who participated in the walk did so as members of teams (a team can be as small as two). Most teams are comprised of people who represent businesses, schools, religious affiliations or professional organizations, but many are groups of friends and family members who walk in memory of someone lost to AIDS.

Despite the intermittent rain, about 47,000 people walked the 10 kilometer route (a few collapsed just after crossing the finish line) and they raised a record breaking, astonishing total of $6,857,527.

Wow! What a wonderful array of photos. You might consider making a collage of some of them; would be interesting, too.

Great coverage of the walkathon. That’s an amazing amount of money to be raised from one event. Congratulations. for a worthy cause.

  3. Thank you for bringing this event so close for people who couldn’t be there. I am in awe of the immense amount of money raised, congratulations.
Here in Vienna, last week the 15th annual LIFE BALL was held, with Sharon Stone attending. Bill Clinton was here the day before, to pick up a one million dollar cheque from the LIFE BALL Fund, raised during last years ball. Not as much as was raised in NY City, but figuring that Austria has fewer inhabitants than New York city, and these were all private funds, not bad either.

Annula, those are wonderful portraits of the people who participated in the Walk. I inspected each and every one. Were you depicted here? It’s wonderful the amount that was raised. Let’s hope there is a cure soon.

these pictures are so good. They draw me to the people in them, in most you captured their essence, it’s in the eyes, like I’m greeting an old friend.

  6. I was out of town that weekend but I always do the God’s Love We Deliver walkathon. Maybe next year, I will do the AIDS Walk as well. Nothing like helping raise money and exercising at the same time.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She
placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There
was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!

  13. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100%
sure. Any recommendations or advice would be
    greatly appreciated. Thanks
